Development of highly transparent polymer foils for space
Up to now fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP) and/or polyimide polymers (PI – Kapton®) are primarily used for space missions. However, cumulated effects of space environment, e.g. Atomic Oxygen (ATOX), VUV/UV radiation cause severe degradation of these polymer materials. The problems connected with the degradation of polymers known from flight missions lead to the embrittlement and loss of material integrity and thermal control. Thus endanger complete missions.
Therefore, at AAC we develop highly transparent polymeric foils with increased resistance to ATOX, high radiation stability, and good thermo-optical properties for their use in Multi-Layer Insulation (MLI) and Optical Surface Reflector (OSR) configurations.
